ILL6 - Confirmation of Practice
This module is a 3 in 1. We have been given a list of projects to choose from and we must pick three to complete, some are more complex than others, but it's a lot of work nevertheless! We were provided with three lists; list one included three projects:
- The RSA Student Design Awards (of which there are several briefs to choose from)
- The Folio Society's annual illustration competition (this year the brief is to illustrate the book Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones)
- U Studio's greeting card design brief
From this list I decided to choose the final option and create a selection of greetings cards for U Studio, which is a card and gift shop in Bristol. The studio has sent us a personalised brief with a set of themes they would like us to stick to. These include the subjects of 'food and drink'; 'TV and celebrity'; and finally politics, which includes more themes such as equality.
I got very excited for this brief because my work is very colourful and I like to incorporate text occasionally, so I feel like it could fit into the greetings card bracket quite well.
U Studio also included in the brief some more insight into other kinds of cards they stock, such as illustrated cards for all occasions and quotes. This is something I would like to try and do as well as the brief as I have a fair few ideas on what I could do.
Below I have attached some of my inspiration for the U Studio brief:
Brief 2
The next brief isn't optional like the last; we have been set the task of entering a project which is open to students all over the UK: The Batsford Prize. This is run by the London based publishers, Pavilion Books and this year the theme for illustration is "Being Human."
For this I am still brainstorming ideas, however I know I would like to do a screenprint as this is something I don't get to do very often and I would like to practice it as much as possible before I graduate.
I have one idea of illustrating a character and using tattoos to explore the them of 'being human'. I feel this could work quite nicely as a screen print, but I am yet to solidify a design. Below is some inspiration for this idea and potentially some other options:
Brief 3
For the final brief, we again have three options to choose from:
- Creating a course Christmas card which will be sent around the college on behalf of the Illustration course
- Create a risoprint or something in relation to risoprinting to display/ sell at the CMYK exhibition
- A personal project from a client you have personally sourced
From this cluster I have chosen to do something for the CMYK exhibition. This is because I really love risoprints and I'd love to learn how to make one myself. Again, I'm unsure as to what I will be designing yet, however I know I would like to follow a blue and pink colour scheme, which will produce some purple tones when the colours overlap. Below is some inspiration:
